Missouri tennis will finally get its first chance to put the pieces together.
After an offseason defined by change, the Tigers are set to open their fall schedule Sept. 25-27 at the Nebraska Invite in Lincoln, beginning a two-month stretch that will take the program across the country and provide its new-look roster with opportunities to establish itself before the spring dual-match season.
The fall will be particularly important for Missouri asRobin Goodman begins his first season as head coach. The Tigers
enter a new era after Bianca Turati departed for Texas, bringing significant turnover to both the roster and coaching staff.
Missouri’s fall schedule offers no shortage of chances to learn exactly where the program stands.
The Tigers begin in Lincoln before traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Charlotte Invite from Oct. 1-4. Those opening tournaments will give Missouri’s players an opportunity to settle into competition and build chemistry before the schedule takes a more significant turn later in October.
The ITA Central Regional, scheduled for Oct. 14-19 in Memphis, Tennessee, represents one of the most important events on Missouri’s calendar.
Individual success carries extra meaning during the fall, when players compete for rankings and postseason opportunities rather than team wins and losses. The regional tournament will offer Missouri’s players a chance to measure themselves against some of the best competition in the region while potentially playing their way toward the next stages of the ITA postseason.
That event is followed quickly by the Jae Foundation Invite, hosted by TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, from Oct. 22-24.
The trip to Fort Worth will also serve as a potential return destination less than two weeks later. Missouri has players scheduled to compete in the ITA Sectionals from Nov. 5-8, another opportunity for the Tigers to continue advancing through the individual postseason.
The same weekend presents another potential destination, as the ITA Conference Masters is scheduled for Nov. 5-8 in Rome, Georgia. Missouri’s participation across the postseason events will depend on qualification and selection, but the calendar gives the Tigers several opportunities to extend their fall campaigns into November.
For the players who are not competing in the ITA events, Missouri also has the June Stewart Invite at Vanderbilt scheduled for Nov. 6-8 in Nashville, Tennessee.
That depth of scheduling should be valuable for a program still building its identity.
Goodman inherits a team with limited continuity from the previous season, making the fall more than simply a collection of individual tournaments. Every weekend will provide another opportunity to experiment with lineups, evaluate players and continue developing the chemistry that will become essential once SEC dual matches begin in the spring.
For Missouri players, the fall also presents a chance to take on larger leadership responsibilities. Sophomore Alex Ackman was the lone returning player from last season’s roster, placing her in a unique position as the bridge between the previous era and the one Goodman is beginning to build.
The Tigers’ newest players will have their own opportunities to establish themselves alongside Ackman while adjusting to Division I tennis and a new coaching staff.
Missouri’s fall could extend all the way to Athens, Georgia, where the NCAA Individual Championships are scheduled for Nov. 17-22. Reaching that stage would require one of the Tigers to emerge through the competitive individual postseason, but its presence on the calendar provides a clear finish line for the fall.
For now, though, the focus is much closer.
Missouri’s first action under Goodman is just weeks away. By the time the Tigers leave Lincoln on Sept. 27, the first chapter of a new era will already be underway.
The fall schedule will not determine Missouri’s entire season, but it will begin answering some important questions about what this team can become.
And for a program undergoing as much change as the Tigers, every answer starts with getting on the court.
