Newcastle United is facing another significant squad decision in the final hours of the transfer window, with one of the club’s longest-serving players attracting increasing Premier League interest.
Veteran winger Jacob Murphy had already emerged as a possible departure earlier this summer, and now Nottingham Forest has been identified as a potential destination.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Forest is actively pushing to sign the 31-year-old before Tuesday’s deadline.
“#NFFC are pushing to sign
Jacob Murphy before the transfer window closes,” Crook reported. “#NUFC could be willing to sanction an exit for Murphy, who is in the final year of his contract at St James’ Park.”
That represents a notable development from The Telegraph’s John Percy’s previous reporting. Percy revealed last week that Forest manager Oliver Glasner wanted additional competition on the right and had identified Murphy as one of three options under consideration.
GIVEMESPORT subsequently reported that Forest was working on a deal for Murphy, increasing the possibility of a late departure.
Even though PIF has the deepest of pockets, there is an obvious financial argument for Newcastle to consider an acceptable proposal, as Murphy is entering the final year of his contract and could leave for nothing next summer.
Selling Murphy, however, would come with considerable risk. The winger has been at Newcastle since 2017 and produced eight goals and 12 assists during his outstanding 2024-25 Premier League campaign and, most importantly, he’s the lone natural replacement for Anthony Elanga on the right wing as things stand.
Crook did not report that Forest has submitted an offer or that Newcastle has agreed to sell. Still, his suggestion that the Magpies could sanction Murphy’s departure makes this significantly more advanced than Forest merely including him on a shortlist.
