Even as the Wildcats navigate the heart of a tough SEC schedule, Mark Stoops’ focus remains firmly on player development. He took time this week to praise several young players who took major strides during the bye week, providing a glimpse into the future of the program.
Cameron Miller’s breakout is much needed
Wide receiver Cameron Miller continues to impress the coaching staff with his playmaking ability. After a strong showing against Georgia, he’s solidifying his role in the rotation.
“Cam is a guy that’s really made plays,” Stoops said.
“When the quarterback gives him a chance, he comes down with the football more times than not.”
And that is something that Kentucky’s receivers have not done at all this year, with the tight ends doing the most damage for Cutter Boley. It was just last week before a receiver caught a touchdown, so not great.
The rise of DJ Miller
Freshman safety DJ Miller also continues to earn more looks in practice, and Stoops emphasized that young players must seize their opportunities.
“They have to do their part, too,” Stoops said. “They have to be consistent and bring an edge every day so we trust them.”
And that is something you need to see on a team that is expected to lose a fair amount of games. The young players have to play, and the key is actually keeping those players, given the looming presence of the transfer portal.
Coachable and consistent
Meanwhile, Stoops singled out defensive lineman CJ Works for his attitude and coachability. “He’s gotten more and more reps and is making the most of it,” Stoops said. “He likes being coached hard, and you can see it paying off.”
As for offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete, Stoops said his steady improvement is exactly what the staff hoped to see when they brought in the experienced big man. “His second SEC game was better than the first,” Stoops said. “He’s one of those guys who doesn’t get down. He just works hard and gets better.”
That theme, growth through consistency, defines Kentucky’s identity right now as they look to build beyond their 2-3 record into hope for next year.
