The Chicago Bears could be starting a third-straight different quarterback against the New York Jets on Sunday.
And for perhaps the first time in Bears history, that isn’t the largest concern.
Such is the Ben Johnson experience.
That isn’t to say it’s not a problem. It just isn’t the biggest problem.
Johnson has proved he can design a game plan that will be effective for about any defense and fit whatever players are available to him at the time.
So let’s get to the keys to the game for the Chicago Bears
to beat the New York Jets on Sunday.
Sam: Rely on the ground game, get behind that offensive line and just grind out a win. The Jets’ pass defense will cause problems, but Chicago has the advantage on the ground. On defense, find a way to get after Geno Smith and don’t let Garrett Wilson beat you.
Lester: The Jets’ defense has been much improved this season, but that shouldn’t prevent the Bears from imposing their will in the running game. Regardless of which backup QB is playing, trying to replicate Monday’s quick pass game plan wouldn’t make sense. On defense, show blitz to confuse the pass protection, but drop off and cover because Geno Smith is completing 84.6% of his passes against the blitz this season.
Josh: I think Ben needs to keep doing Ben things, hunting explosives with relentless attention to the run game and shoving bodies around. Dennis Allen just made doubters look silly, and now he needs to show that it wasn’t a fluke. Take advantage of the loss of Hall and contest every catch.
Donald: So I’m going with the theory it is Tyson on Sunday. With that, the key for Tyson is to model himself after Case against the Eagles – quick and efficient passing. Don’t turn the ball over. Lean on the run game. With Swift on the report, I think the Bears will feature Monangai, and I think he can handle the load against the Jets. As for the defense, we know Geno puts the ball in harm’s way. I see Muhammed and Thineman getting on the board with picks. And we will see another good DL line stack with Booker, Sweat, and motivated Dayo getting pressure. If the Bears win the turnover battle and BJ again dissects the opposing defense, the Bears will have another victory in their grasp.
Mongo Peanut: The Jets are better than they have been recently, and the Bears need to come in prepared. Still, the Bears are the more talented and complete team, even with Caleb sidelined. The key to the game is for the Bears to simply limit the mistakes. They have committed a lot of penalties and have executed poorly in the red zone thus far, having only scored TDs on 50% of trips, which is good for 21st in the league.
If the Bears clean those things up and play an efficient operation, they ought to win this one.
