Bayern Munich’s newly signed winger Luis Díaz is giving the team’s attack a much needed spark, tallying five goals and four assists so far. However, his finishing has not been optimal, leading the Bundesliga
with the most missed big chances so far, 6 in total. For Swiss journalist Marcel Reif, Díaz numbers look great, if only for the missed chances. Reif stated that the Colombian’s numbers should be looked at critically (Bild show “Reif ist Live” via Sport Bild): “I do think you have to question certain things critically. If I were the coach, I’d say: at least he’s creating chances. If he weren’t creating them, then we’d really have to be critical…”
For Reif, Díaz’ redeeming quality is his ability to create chances, even if he misses clear opportunities himself from time to time. Nevertheless, for a striker of his caliber, Díaz could work on his finishing. “…it’s quite obvious. For a top striker, he misses far too many clear chances,” he concluded.
Díaz has had some bad misses…no doubt. However, his impact on the Bayern Munich attack goes far beyond his scoring. The Colombian has added some life to the attack and been an extremely hard worker. While his finishing must improve, there are a lot of positives that Díaz is currently bringing to the table.
Bayern Munich traveled to Cologne for a midweek DFB-Pokal tilt with FC Köln.
Heading into the match, the Bavarians were riding high, but the squad knew that FC Köln would not be an easy out in front of its home crowd. Ultimately, Bayern Munich pulled out a 4-1 victory doing exactly what they have done to every other opponent it has had of late — wear them down and pounce.
