49ers overreactions: Is Brandon Aiyuk’s return even needed for team to win? “If Aiyuk returns off the physically-unable-to-perform list and is able to play at a high level, that’s found money. Whether
they need him or not is a good discussion point.
“When you have such a big injury like that, you wait until he’s fully comfortable to come up and start practicing,” Shanahan said Monday.
Right now, the 49ers have Jennings, Pearsall, Kendrick Bourne and Demarcus Robinson as their top four wide receivers.
As for the future, Aiyuk is under contract through the 2028 season after signing a four-year, $120 million extension before the 2024 campaign. But, as we’ve learned with lucrative, long-term contracts in the NFL, there are no absolutes there, either.
That is why just about anything seems possible at this point.“
49ers game review: Upton Stout’s strength is surprising. His weakness? Alarming (paywall)
“The takeaway was more evidence that Stout is excellent at the work for which he appears ill-equipped: He ranks 33rd among 104 qualifying cornerbacks in run defense, according to Pro Football Focus, despite being the lightest and shortest (5-foot-8½ inches) among the 56 defensive backs at the combine nine months ago…Yes, Stout has opened eyes by blasting running backs, but fans might want to avert their gaze when it comes to his PFF coverage grade: Stout ranks 109th of 110 qualifying cornerbacks. Only two cornerbacks have allowed more receptions (42) and just eight have surrendered more yards (425).”
Week 11 Tape Takeaways: How Ricky Pearsall actually played, and the rookie DTs might just be getting there (paywall)
“There were a couple times — a whip-ish route in the end zone when Pearsall looked on a different page from Purdy, and a deep dig that took a little too long — when the long layoff showed, but Pearsall was overwhelmingly snappy, and a real problem in man coverage. There were plenty of times he was open, and the play just went to the other side of the field….Purdy was probably worse on tape than I expected. That’s to say, he was very good, but he had a couple of near interceptions, and was a half tick late on more than a few occasions. I’m not sure if it was a lack of trust or just a need to get back in game rhythm, but there were plays left out there. That’s probably a good thing for him to see as he reacclimates.”
49ers work out three kickers to replace Eddy Piñeiro
Brown has spent time with the Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons since entering the NFL in 2023, but has yet to appear in a regular-season game.
Carlson appeared in two games with the 49ers in 2024, so there is some familiarity there. He has also played for the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets, appearing in 24 career games and converting 40 of his 48 field-goal attempts. Carlson was with the Jets for five games last season, working with current 49ers special teams coordinator Brant Boyer and holder Thomas Morstead.
Romo, who entered the league in 2022, has appeared in games with the Minnesota Vikings. He spent this season with the Atlanta Falcons before being waived on November 4. Romo has connected on 22 of his 26 career field-goal attempts.“
