Two WWE favorites went head-to-head in the latest Hot One Versus, a spin-off of the popular interview-and-hot-wings series hosted by Sean Evans. In Versus, two contestants go head-to-head in a variety
of games and challenges to determine who will eat “The Last Dab”, the show’s hottest custom sauce that’s usually reserved for Evans’ interview guests… the ones who make it that far, anyway.
World Heavyweight champion CM Punk and his superstar wife AJ Mendez (aka AJ Lee) took each other on in Versus. The results were definitive, but not without some pro wrestling-esque tomfoolery.
There were five challenges and wings yet AJ won 3-0, so that tells you something right there. The couple quickly let us know that doing Versus was her idea, yet she seems to be the one who hates spicy food. As such, there are a couple times where Punk seems to or actually does win a challenge and either eats the wing himself or calls it draw.
Regardless, if you’re a fan of either — and definitely if you’re a fan of them as a couple — you should watch it. Punk burning his mouth so Mendez won’t have to is just one of the ways we see how in love these two are. AJ calling her husband “Philip” (she at one point gives him a while “Philip Jack Brooks”) is adorable, as is watching them rate past looks, and reflecting on moments from their past.
It’s there that we learn more about the pairs’ early on-screen kisses. Punk jokes that his wife “headbutted” him with her “snaggle” (overbite) on their first kiss, but the second sounds perfect. He said of it:
“Then with the second one, you went for it. I don’t know, I just think I kind of got lost in the moment and I forgot there was thousands of people in the arena and millions of people at home watching. It was just me and her. I kind of maybe lost my mind a little bit.”
AJ seems to love messing with her husband almost as much as she loves him. When he repurposes a “Mount Rushmore of Women’s Wrestling” question to reflect the Native American natural monument that was there before “a bunch of random white people decided to carve faces in it, asking for her Six Grandfathers instead. Mendez had to tease Punk about his dating history halfway through:
“Chyna, Lita, Beth Phoenix — you’ve dated a lot of these. I’m sorry, is it awkward? You have really good taste.“
That obviously includes her, but before adding her own name…
“Before me, I’d say Mickie James. Then me. Then from the current generation, Bayley. It’s hard to only pick one, I can do six of just this generation. They’re so good. Lyra, Roxanne, Rhea, Jade, Becky….”
Punk takes issue with Becky Lynch’s name, which gives Hot Ones a chance to flash back to her Versus with her husband and Punk’s nemesis Seth Rollins. The Visionary takes a verbal shot from the Best n the World, but not as strong as the ones Drew McIntyre (Punk just called him a “c**t”) or Dirty Dom Mysterio (a closing “f**k you”) got.
In the final game, Punk and AJ went head-to-head on the microphone in a pick-up line battle. She somehow didn’t crack when he hit her with:
“Are you my little toe? Because I’m gonna bang you on every piece of furniture in my house.”
And he didn’t even smirk when she came back with:
“My heart turns into an annoying wrestling crowd whenever you’re around, because you’ve still got it.”
Then Punk finished off his missus with:
“Remind me to never face you in a submission match, because that ass doesn’t quit.”
But seeing Mendez’s dread at eating The Last Dab, Punk ignored his numb tongue and upset stomach and ate it for her.
Now that’s true love.
