We are now in the midst of the fourth season since Bryce Harper transitioned to being a full-time first baseman when playing the field. Since he first put the first baseman’s mitt on, Harper has impressed with how well he has taken to the new position. In fact, he turned himself into a gold glove caliber defender by 2025 as he was nominated for the award last offseason but ended up losing to Matt Olson of the Braves.
It’s been a different story so far in 2026, however. Harper entered Wednesday 19th
out of 24 qualified first basemen in defensive runs saved (-2), tied for last in fielding run value (-5), and 23rd in fielding outs above average (-6). In fact, that -6 OAA is among the worst for all qualified defenders at any position. Fielding metrics are not an exact science and are hard to put too much into this early in a season, but it’s nevertheless noteworthy where they currently have Harper ranked defensively.
By the eye test, Harper hasn’t been egregiously bad, and his traditional statistics support that notion, as he has only two errors and a .995 fielding percentage. However, that does not erase his extremely poor showing on Tuesday night. Harper aggressively fielded multiple balls in the hole and left first base unguarded to allow runners to be safe and skipped a throw home that cost the Phillies a run despite the drawn in infield. But that was perhaps the only game so far this year where Harper’s defense has stood out in a negative way.
So, what do you think of Bryce Harper’s defense so far in 2026? Do you agree with the advanced metrics and believe he’s been subpar? Or do you think he’s been about the same as he has been before? Can you recall any other games where his defense impacted the game in a negative manner? How about any games where his glove help contributed to a win?
