Newcastle United’s midfield planning is becoming increasingly complicated as rival clubs continue to test the club’s resolve over Eddie Howe’s leading players.
According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, with Howe a long-time admirer of the Germany international.
Sky Sports reported that Howe considered signing Nmecha in 2023 before Newcastle instead completed a deal for Sandro Tonali from AC Milan. Back then, BVB signed him for €30 million. Now,
it’s fair to assume Newcastle would need to pay double that figure.
“Newcastle are interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha,” Sky Sports reported.
The 25-year-old joined Dortmund from Wolfsburg in 2023 and later scored against Newcastle at St James’ Park in the Champions League. He has impressed for Germany at the World Cup and has an €85 million release clause and is valued at €50 million in Transfermarkt, with his Dortmund contract running through 2030.
Sky Sports reported that Newcastle would want to pay less than the release clause because of their recruitment model, which simply makes the deal unfeasible unless Dortmund lower their demands substantially.
Keith Downie added that Newcastle “won’t, and aren’t” considering a move at the current clause price.
The interest comes as Newcastle face the sales of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Tottenham and Arsenal, respectively.
Tottenham have already seen an £80 million bid for Tonali rejected, while Manchester City remain interested. Arsenal, meanwhile, submitted an already-rejected £60 million offer for Bruno and could also enter the Tonali sweepstakes.
For now, Nmecha looks like a player Newcastle admire, but not enough and only at the right price.
