A growing number of Seattle Seahawks fans were concerned that star edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence was going to retire after Seattle won the Super Bowl. Survey says: that was incorrect.
Lawrence returned to the Seahawks’ facility for OTAs on Thursday and reaffirmed his commitment to defending the Seahawks’ Super Bowl title in 2026. After all, winning the Super Bowl was Lawrence’s entire goal in joining Mike Macdonald’s defense after 11 years with the Dallas Cowboys.
“I still have more to give,” Lawrence
told Seahawks reporter John Boyle after day two of OTAs. “And also, I had the most fun I’ve ever had playing football last year. So just taking all of that into consideration, knowing what I’d be leaving behind, the chances (of retirement) were very slim.”
If Lawrence still has more to give, that’s a great sign for Seattle, especially after the team let edge rusher Boye Mafe walk in free agency back in March. Even in his 12th year, Lawrence was still a dominant force with the Seahawks, recording six sacks and 53 tackles in his latest Pro Bowl season.
Plus, it seems fitting that one of the leaders behind naming the 2025 defense “The Dark Side” would want to come back for at least one more year.
As it turns out, Lawrence had a pretty good reason for missing the voluntary workouts, as he was taking care of his newborn child. Lawrence said he has been in communication with his coaches the entire time, who understood his family responsibilities come first.
“Shout out to the fans that are concerned about me, just let them know D-Law is doing well,” Lawrence told Boyle. “I’m currently working back in Texas right now. I’ve got the newborn and a 1-year-old, so I can’t leave mom with all those responsibilities. She knows I’ll be back here for the season, and the coaching staff knows my game plan.”
With it now confirmed that Lawrence will be with the Seahawks for this season, we can all look forward to him once again getting after Drake Maye in the Seahawks’ season opener on Sept. 9.
