Good afternoon, BBN!
The latest CBS Sports “Candid Coaches” poll asked more than 100 college basketball coaches to name the best Xs and Os coach in the game right now.
Matt Painter led the way with 19 percent
of the vote, followed closely by Dan Hurley at 18 percent and Greg McDermott at 16 percent.
Those three names combined for more than half the votes. Other respected coaches, such as Kelvin Sampson, Ben McCollum, Randy Bennett, Tom Izzo, Bill Self, Rick Barnes, and Nate Oats, also earned recognition, but none reached a higher percentage than seven percent.
What stood out most was the absence of Mark Pope from the list altogether. Not only was he not mentioned in the top tier, but he also failed to appear in the “other” category, which included a wide range of names.
Pope has often been viewed as one of the sharper minds when it comes to game planning and adjustments, so his omission is surprising and slightly disrespectful.
The only way to change it is to produce on the court this season.
