It would have been understandable if the Friar Faithful were not expecting the San Diego Padres to mount a comeback in the final game of the series against the Boston Red Sox after falling behind 4-0 in the third inning. San Diego starter Walker Buehler worked through the first two innings without much trouble, but he found plenty of it in the third and was chased from the game after just 2.2 innings pitched. The final line for the right-hander was four runs allowed on three hits, with three walks,
and four strikeouts.
The Padres responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and the scoring started when Jackson Merrill lined a ball into right-center field to score Fernando Tatis Jr. from second base. Merrill scored later in the inning along with Manny Machado on a Nick Castellanos two-run single.
San Diego was trailing 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning when Machado stepped to the plate with two on and two out. Luis Campusano and Merrill both reached on singles earlier in the inning and they both trotted home to score when Machado launched a three-run home run into the seats atop the Green Monster in left field to put San Diego in front of Boston 6-4.
The Red Sox tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 6-6 and set the stage for Merrill in the top of the eighth. The Padres centerfielder led off the top of the eighth with an opposite field solo home to put San Diego ahead 7-6. San Diego tacked on a run in the top of the ninth inning when Tatis Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to right, which allowed Gavin Sheets to score to put the Padres up 8-6.
That margin was more than enough for Mason Miller who earned his third save of the season with a quick and efficient bottom of the ninth, which resulted in three strikeouts. San Deigo won the game and the series against Boston and heads t0 Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates, who have won their last five games.
