Penalty, or no penalty? That question has loomed large time and time again in Bayern Munich matches recently, with the Bavarians on the receiving end of both harsh and favorable decisions.
This time, Bayern’s
Josip Stanišić may have got away with one — at least, opposing coach Ole Werner feels that way.
The Bayern right-back awkwardly stuck his leg in on a challenge right at the edge of the Bayern box to bring down Leipzig attacker Antonio Nusa as he charged forward. It was around the half-hour mark, with the score still nil-nil. Nusa fell to the turf inside the box, and eventually the referee flashed a yellow — but only at the Leipzig bench after Werner’s protests.
Werner continued to make his case after the match, a 2-0 Bayern victory.
“It’s absolutely insane that not even a foul was called,” Werner declared in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “For me it was a penalty. The contact was on the line. You need certain decisions to go your way to have a chance here, we didn’t have these moments today — it was a deserved win for Bayern.”
The game was a scrappy affair from start to finish, but it is hard to argue that the Bavarians did not get gentle treatment from the referees today. The contact looked close but ahead of the line — at least, both players had both feet well ahead at the time of contact — but it was certainly surprising to see the ball dropped at the foot of a Bayern player after the pause was over.
Stanišić would go on to earn a penalty for his side in the second half after forcing Leipzig keeper Maarten Vandevoordt into a desperate foul. That resulted in Bayern’s opening goal, and, in short order, the clinching second one arrived as well. From there, it was good night to Leipzig’s hopes of progressing in the cup. Werner is certainly right in one way at least: tonight, the critical moments all belonged to Bayern.
