Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany remember how FC Augsburg fought back in the first meeting this season between the clubs — a 3-2 win for the Bavarians.
The coach is intent on ensuring that his team
does not overlook Die Fuggerstädter.
“Augsburg will certainly have seen how the last few games have gone. We’ve had some difficulties there, that’s normal, that’s the Bundesliga, the games aren’t easy. If we look at the game against Union Saint-Gilloise the day before yesterday – considering the system and the players’ profiles – I can imagine Augsburg learned a lot from it and have high ambitions and believe in their chances,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “For us, it means that playing against us is like a final for the opponent, like winning a cup for many teams, and we don’t want to give that away. We don’t differentiate between Augsburg and Leipzig, we want to perform at the highest level, no matter what comes our way.”
The manager was also quizzed about the status of both Jamal Musiala, who did not play against Uion Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League on Wednesday and Alphonso Davies, who fans are clamoring to see start a game.
“There’s not much to say, it’s the fifth game in 14 days – that doesn’t mean everything will change in our plan in a week or two. He got minutes against Leipzig. Maybe, (Musiala will) get minutes tomorrow if he feels good. Everything is going according to plan for him,” Kompany said. “(Davies will) soon be a candidate for the starting XI again. But for tomorrow not much has changed from the last game. He came on and immediately showed what he can do. That was a very positive performance for him in the last game.”
As for how Kompany will compensate for all all of the injuries on the backline, the coach has a plan…he just will not detail it in a press conference.
“Josip Stanišić, Konrad Laimer, Sacha Boey, and now (Dayot Upamecano) are all defenders we don’t have at the moment. Nevertheless, we have good competition: Hiroki Itō is fit, ((Kim) Min-jae is fit, Raphaël Guerreiro and Tom Bischof. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka can also play in defense for us if needed. Min-jae won’t play next week [against PSV], we’re aware of that – so we have thoughts just like we did with Lucho when he was suspended for the Champions League. But I’m never really concerned about the starting eleven because I’ve always had the team’s reliability,” Kompany said.
The coach sure can dodge a question when he wants to. Anyway, there was little shot that Kompany would actually reveal his plan prior to a game, but the media had to ask anyway.
