The Matt Campbell era is off to a triumphant start in Happy Valley as Penn State football trounced Marshall 45-0 in the season opener. Between subtle stadium changes, breakout players, and a generally good vibe, there was plenty to talk about on social media during the game.
Once media was allowed into Beaver Stadium early Saturday afternoon, news began to trickle in about some of the changes Penn State made to the concourse. The combination of a new head coach and massive stadium renovations gave
the university a big opportunity to swap some things out from the James Franklin era.
The biggest changes were a new “success with honor” sign and a highlighting of section 409. While plenty of fans were excited to see subtle nods to Joe Paterno’s legacy, others disagreed with the shift in messaging.
Speaking of changes, Penn State (and Matt Campbell) was doing plenty to remind folks in the stands that this isn’t James Franklin’s rodeo anymore.
The off-field changes bled into in-game successes, too, largely in the passing game.
Wideout Koby Howard had a breakout performance, essentially cementing himself as Penn State’s WR1 and proving he’s a star in the making. A successful air attack is, obviously, a departure from years past.
On Saturday afternoon, you could almost feel the Penn State fanbase take a collective breath of fresh air. Things felt a lot different from 2025, and almost all in positive ways. It seems, for now, like the program is in good hands.
While Penn State-Marshall was the main event for Nittany Lions fans, most of the college football world had its eyes elsewhere this weekend. We had an all-time chaotic ending in Michigan-Western Michigan, a close call for Oregon, and a terribly embarrassing start to the season by Rutgers.
