While it seems like the top of the goalkeeper depth chart has been settled with Matt Freese the presumed starter, there are additional spots up for grabs backing him up. Roman Celentano has been a getting attention with the national team since 2023 but has yet to appear internationally. He also won MLS Save of the Year last season and at 25 has a bright career ahead of him.
His callup for the Belgium and Portugal friendlies is certainly deserved, but he will miss those games due to being held out
for a precaution due to injury. Patrick Schulte of the Columbus Crew will step in for the Cincinnati netminder as the Hell is Real derby will still be represented among the keepers.
Schulte has three appearances for the national team including a clean sheet to his name. While Freese has been starting, there are still questions about the keeper position. While much of the discussion has been about who might be backing him up, another keeper in the pool could pass him in the depth chart as the World Cup looms in a few short months.
