Germany’s new era under manager Jürgen Klopp is just beginning and the squad is still taking shape. After all, no manager determined to prioritize winning over experimenting nominates 45 players for an international break.
Having said that, the era certainly could have started better. A 1-1 draw against the Netherlands was followed up by Germany’s first ever loss to Greece, marking two more games without a win since the failure in the 2026 World Cup. Angry, Germany legend Bastian Schweinsteiger called
the team average after the match.
His successor in midfield, Joshua Kimmich, was asked by reporter Kerry Hau about Schweinsteiger’s statement and did not mince his words at all:
“I can hardly disagree with that. At the moment, we’re way off being a top team,” the Bayern Munich midfielder admitted (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
No top team performs the way Germany did in the past two matches. But no top team was more in need of the experimentation Klopp has done this international window. The hope is that things will start getting better soon. Will Klopp’s era eventually bring a new dawn and raise Germany to the top of international football, or will Germany experience the same crushing disappointment it has for the last decade?
