It’s been a long road to recovery for both Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala at Bayern Munich, having both spent considerable spells on the sidelines with their injury problems. Musiala has been out since
picking up his leg and ankle injury at the FIFA Club World Cup in July and Davies has been out ever since sustaining his ACL injury back in March playing for Canada at the CONCACAF Nations League. Thankfully for Vincent Kompany and Bayern, the club has done just fine, having won all 15 of their opening matches across all competitions to start the season.
At left-back, Kompany has predominantly been using a combination of Raphaël Guerreiro, Konrad Laimer, and even Tom Bischof in Davies’ absence, and all three players have shone quite well for themselves when they’ve deputized there. Of course, having Davies back in the squad will still be a very welcome sight.
Per information from Az’s Maximilian Koch, the current plan for Davies is to have him fully join up with team training after this month’s international break. That means a tentative return date for the Canadian international could be in the Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg on the 22nd of the month. If not then, Davies would be looking at a return in the Champions League against Arsenal on the 26th, or three days later against FC St. Pauli back in the Bundesliga.
Either way, Kompany won’t want to rush him back too soon from such a long injury layover and his minutes coming back into the team are going to have to be managed properly. By the time Davies is set to mark his first appearance of the season, Bayern could have even more of a cushion at the top of the Bundesliga table than they already do right now, so it might make the most sense to have him play in one of those matches as opposed to having the Arsenal match be his first match back.

- A primer for Bayern Munich vs. Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and what this matchday could be special for a number of teams.
- Some of Vincent Kompany’s wild ideas are paying dividends. The experiment with Tom Bischof at left-back achieved many goals and is one of the examples of how Kompany has built trust with in the team.
- News and notes from the AGM: Record turnover, the re-election of Herbert Hainer as president, and the continued struggle to make waves internationally with marketing. Can Bayern Munich break through in other countries or does this need to be more of an effort from other teams in the Bundesliga to make the league more marketable?
- Why has Bayern Munich and the league itself struggle to make in-roads abroad? Let’s explore.
