Bayern Munich has plenty of firepower going forward, but Wednesday’s Champions League showdown with Arsenal could come down to a much less glamorous question — can Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović control the midfield against one of Europe’s most physically imposing, tactically disciplined sides?
This is precisely the kind of match that can silence doubters. It is also the kind of game that can reinforce every concern Bayern Munich fans and pundits have raised about the team’s ability to dominate
elite opposition when the pressure is on.
Arsenal is not coming to Munich to admire the Allianz Arena or to raid Harry Kane’s schnitzel supplier. It will look to disrupt Bayern Munich’s rhythm, win second balls, press aggressively, and exploit any gaps left behind when Vincent Kompany’s side pushes forward. Bayern Munich’s midfield must be prepared for a battle, not just a passing exhibition.
And Declan Rice will be right at the center of it.
Declan Rice is the benchmark
Rice is exactly the sort of midfielder Bayern Munich must be able to handle if they want to establish itself as a genuine Champions League contender. Rice combines physical power, defensive awareness, intelligent positioning, and the ability to drive Arsenal forward when space opens up. He can break up attacks, carry the ball through pressure, and help Arsenal regain control when opponents try to overwhelm them.
The challenge for Kimmich and Pavlović is not simply to match Rice physically. It is to prevent him from dictating the tempo and turning midfield recoveries into dangerous Arsenal attacks.
If Bayern Munich allows Rice to dominate the second balls and dictate transitions, the home side could find itself chasing the game in more ways than one.
Kimmich must lead the response
Kimmich has the experience, passing range, and footballing intelligence to control a match of this magnitude. But this is where the scrutiny becomes particularly intense. Bayern Munich fans have seen their midfield struggle to impose itself in difficult moments, and Kimmich is inevitably central to those discussions. His ability to dictate possession means little if Arsenal can repeatedly bypass Bayern’s pressure or exploit the spaces left behind.
Kimmich must move the ball quickly, resist Arsenal’s press, and recognize when to accelerate the attack rather than recycle possession. Just as importantly, he must provide the positional discipline Bayern Munich needs when their full-backs push forward.
This is not a match for Kimmich to merely accumulate touches. He needs to make those touches matter.
Pavlović has a point to prove
Pavlović offers Bayern Munich composure on the ball and the ability to progress possession through the middle. His recent goal against RB Leipzig was a welcome reminder of his attacking contribution, but Arsenal present a very different challenge from a Bundesliga opponent Bayern defeated 6-1.
The young midfielder must show that he can maintain his technical quality when opponents close him down aggressively. His positioning, defensive awareness, and ability to support Kimmich will be just as important as his passing.
Bayern Munich cannot afford to have one midfielder controlling possession while the other struggles to cope with the intensity of the contest.
No more excuses
Arsenal will provide a revealing examination of Bayern Munich’s midfield balance. Can Kimmich and Pavlović dictate possession against elite opposition? Can they win their individual battles with Rice and Arsenal’s supporting midfielders? And can they protect the defense without sacrificing Bayern’s attacking ambition?
These are the questions that matter when the competition moves beyond comfortable domestic victories.
Bayern Munich’s 6-1 demolition of RB Leipzig offered plenty of encouragement, but Wednesday’s encounter demands a different kind of performance. With Michael Olise suspended, Bayern will also be without one of their most influential creative outlets, placing even greater responsibility on the midfield to help generate attacking momentum.
The talent is there. The experience is there. Now comes the test.
If Bayern Munich wants to silence the midfield doubters, Kimmich and Pavlović need to prove they can go toe-to-toe with Rice and Arsenal when the stakes are high.
Song of the Week: “My World” by Empty Trail
This is a little known song from a lesser known band that I would say would have been a massive hit in the late 1990s early 2000s. Timing is everything, though. This track was released in 2018 and it is very good.
The music business works so differently now that it becomes a big question of who makes it vs. who doesn’t. Admittedly, I don’t know a ton about the band, aside from a few songs, but it appears they are truly trying to make it independently.
If I remember correctly, I might have come across this on YouTube and not on the radio (which is odd for me).
If you like what you hear, you can check out theband’s website. It is hard to get info on them any other way.
Entertainment Rundown
I’m not ready to review anything just yet (Booo!).
Predictions
There is no doubt — Arsenal is Bayern Munich’s biggest test so far this season.
After shaking off a couple of disappointing draws, the Bavarians thrashed RB Leipzig last weekend, but are not exactly entering this showdown at full strength. Michael Olise is suspended, Jamal Musiala is out, and Manuel Neuer is coming off of an injury.
It is not ideal.
That said, Arsenal will be without William Saliba and Christos Tzolis, while Piero Hincapié is doubtful.
The real shame of it is that the fans will be robbed of seeing these two heavyweights go at it while at full strength. It will still be a marquee matchup, but could leave fans on both sides yearning for a little more.
