Moving on up.
No. 12-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight Melquizael Costa
has had enough of suffering through brutal weight cuts and is officially moving up to Lightweight. That’s because “The Dalmatian” is apparently cutting close to 50 pounds to make the Featherweight limit, and he’s finally done putting his body through it.
The Brazilian announced the move on social media today.
“It was a good run in this [division], but my body can’t handle cutting 22 kilos for each fight anymore,”
Costa wrote. “Let’s go Lightweight.”
For those wondering, 22 kilograms is equivalent to 48.5 pounds, so yeah, it’s safe to say Costa’s process of getting down to Featherweight must be absolutely miserable.
Costa (26-8) saw his impressive six-fight win streak snapped last month when he dropped a unanimous decision to top contender Arnold Allen. Prior to that, he became the first fighter to ever stop Dan Ige (watch highlights), brutally knocked out Morgan Charriere (watch highlights), had a “Fight of the Night” war with Julian Erosa, and submitted Andre Fili.
The Brazilian is currently 7-3 in UFC, and two of those losses came at Lightweight against Thiago Moises and Steve Garcia.
Now, Costa will try to make noise in one of the deepest — and most unforgiving — divisions in the entire sport.
Will the move pay off?
I guess we’ll find out soon.
