AC Milan center-back Fikayo Tomori has been one of the defenders most heavily linked
with Newcastle United throughout the summer transfer window.Reports over the past week claimed the Magpies were leading the race for the Serie A defender, preparing formal offers and even closing in on an agreement after the Italian club reportedly set a €20 million asking price.
The Athletic, however, has poured cold water on those reports while outlining Newcastle’s remaining transfer priorities.
“Howe wants to bring
in at least one full-back and a goalkeeper,” the report says. “Whether another wide attacker is pursued later in the window remains to be seen and depends on outgoings.”
The Athletic, however, made Newcastle’s stance on Tomori unequivocally clear. That said, with Eddie Howe out of Tyneside, things might change.
“Despite repeatedly being linked with Milan’s Fikayo Tomori, Newcastle are not pursuing the 28-year-old England international defender,” The Athletic reported.
The update directly contradicts several recent reports that claimed Newcastle was leading the race for Tomori, with MilanNews24 reporting that the Magpies had already submitted a formal bid and were nearing a deal.
Instead, The Athletic revealed Newcastle’s focus remains elsewhere as the club continues to assess possible reinforcements both on defense and in other areas of the squad, including landing a No. 1 goalkeeper.
With this, we can remove Tomori from Newcastle’s plans for good and forget about a saga that was starting to be a multi-chapter one this summer.
