Welcome to the FC Bayern Campus Round Up, where the matches of Bayern Munich’s U-19 and U-17 squads are recapped, line ups are provided and the highlights to the matches are hyperlinked on top of their respective score line. Remember, highlights can be watched for free once one has established an account on Bayern’s website. Unfortunately, because the U-19s played in the Junior DFB-Pokal. Bayern did not release a live stream or any highlights. In turn, the U-17’s derby against 1859+1 was live streamed
on YouTube. If one has a VPN to set to germany or already lives in the country, the game can be watched here.

FV Illertissen 0-2 Bayern II (U-23), Matchday 5
Bayern lineup (with subs): Bärtl – Schmitz, Heindl, Pavić (73. Kiala), Ajayi – Lambe (64. Santos Daiber), Olychenko, – Wilson (46. Srb), Heinz (73. Codjo-Evora), Assomo, Cardozo (80. Gashi).
Goals: 0:1 Assomo (21.), 0:2 Heinz (72.)
Red card: Redier (29.)

Position: 15., 4 points
It finally happened. After 5 games, Dante’s U-23s have their first win. It was very unexpected, too, as Bayern traveled to 2nd placed (and previously unbeaten throughout 5 matches) FV Illertissen as the clear underdogs. Having unfortunately also lost Guido Della Rovere and Younes Aitamer to injuries, Dante decided to line up somewhat differently in a 4-4-2. Star strikers Anton Heinz and Bastian Assomo lined up next to each other while Cardozo and Wilson flanked them in a very attack heavy lineup.
Early on, the same unfortunate patterns that have plagued the team in recent games showed up. Though the team manages to build play up fairly well, once the team crosses the halfway line, they have little idea what should come next. Too often long passes were played nowhere, passes were played to clearly marked teammates or the ball was played wide before crosses were lofted into the box from very deep positions. There was little to no idea as to how to move the ball around, retain it while exposing gaps in the opposition defense or even progress it to the final third of the pitch at all. And when the home side countered and bypassed the press, the defense seemed stretched and not really in sync. It was just too easy for them to find space.
Fortunately, those moments rarely came to pass because the press was so good. Time and time again, Illertissen attempted to cross the halfway line only to be thwarted by the midfielders and the defenders. Filip Pavić in particular looked quite impressive defending in these situations. Still, when Illertissen did overcome the press, they got into and around Bayern’s box far more than Bayern did theirs. It looked like a bit of a stalemate.
Until one of the deep crosses improbably led to a goal. Left back Richard Ajayi, possibly the team’s best crosser, saw Maycon Cardozo making a run and lofted the ball to him. There was very little space, though, and the ball was a little too high for Cardozo, so he did the only thing he could and extended the cross through heading it up and over. This then fell perfectly for the lurking Bastian Assomo, who made the subsequent first time volleyed finish look simple in the 21st minute.
The goal gave Bayern a lead to defend and things got better when Illertissen got a red card. Bogdan Olychenko found some rare space in midfield and threaded a pass through to Assomo. The striker’s intelligent movement saw him open the space for the ball to be played through and his strength and size allowed him to hold his marker off, before using his agility to go after the ball. He would have been through on goal, so the only way to stop the chance from happening was by hauling him down. His marker Reider did exactly that, earning himself a red card for the last man challenge in the 29th minute and leaving his team to play a man down for an entire hour.
That gave Bayern enough to ease to the win. The subsequent 60 minutes did not look like a 10 v 11 match and Bayern created very little more before the hour mark of the game had passed, but eventually captain Benno Schmitz put the ball in for star striker Anton Heinz to acrobatically head the second goal into the net late in the second half. Game, set, match.
It was not all good news for Bayern, though. Cardozo’s late challenge on an opponent saw him land very awkwardly on his shoulder. He immediately grabbed it and signaled for the team’s doctors, who had to haul him off immediately. There are suspicions that this injury could rule him out for several months. Hopefully Cardozo will have a speedy recovery.
Bayern U-19 4-2 FC Ingolstadt U-19, Youth DFB Pokal Round 2
Bayern lineup (with subs): Podar-Stiube – El-Chaar (64. Egwuatu), Mijatović, Pavlić, Nuraj (46. Schmid) – Matosevic, Osmani, Schaff (90.+1 Horvath) – Imade (77. Maric), Von Taube, Afanou (46. Snip).
Goals: 0:1 Kabbia (7.), 0:2 Apemegno (23.), 1:2 Schaff (71.), 2:2 Egwuatu (78.), 3:2 Annabi (81./ OG), 4:2 Osmani (90.+5).
Red cards: Leopold Schmid [Bayern] (68.), Felix Walther [Ingolstadt] (84.)
Unavailable players: Matthias Kösters (Schulterverletzung), Aristide Hentcho Nseke (Oberschenkelverletzung) & Thibault Maspimby (Knieverletzung).
What an unbelievable comeback. This might genuinely be a once in a generation comeback for a Bayern youth team. And they didn’t even film it! What a shame. Bayern faced FC Ingolstadt for the second time in a week, having overcome the previously perfect team 3-1 previously after some clinical finishing at the right times of the match. Erblin Osmani finally made his first start of the season following a long term injury while Leopold Schmid made his first appearance since suffering a forearm injury in preseason.
Unfortunately, the return match saw the visitors prove more clinical at first as Ingolstadt used their chances to go 2-0 up at half-time while Bayern fluffed theirs miserably. The Bavarians created a little more in the second half, but fluffed those as well as the 2-0 deficit stayed intact throughout most of the second half. Schmid even soured his return by picking up two yellows to get sent off, leaving Bayern with just 10 men and 20 minutes to overcome a 2-0 deficit.
Somehow, they did exactly that. Simon Schaff placed a great effort into the back of the net in the 71st minute, substitute Frank Egwuatu got the equalizer in the 78th and in the 81st minute they even got themselves in front as Ingolstadt defender Annabi deflected a Schaff cross/shot into goal. Osmani sealed the deal in the 95th minute to cap off a crazy comeback. After the drama against RSV Eintracht in the previous round of the cup, where Bayern scored in the 89th, 90+3 and 90+5 minutes to overcome a 1-0 deficit win the game, somehow the team contrived to give all the fans another heart attack before making a late comeback.
This sees Bayern’s U-19s move on to the Round of 16 of the Youth DFB Pokal for the first time in years.
Bayern U-17 3-2 TSV 1859+1 Munich, Matchday 4
Bayern lineup (with subs): Röhlk – Herber (90. Nduka), Schreyer, Ebert, Etüz – Mujic, Ciglar (68. Hoffmann), Rieber (20. Hiseni) – Ludwig (68. Dachgruber), Krasniqi, Mahr (90. Rama).
Goals: 1:0 Krasniqi (8.), 2:0 Mahr (13.), 3:0 Mahr (16.), 3:1 Ibrahimi (20.), 3:2 Saiti (23.).
Unavailable players: Vedad Turbic (Fußverletzung), Kemi Seudie (Beckenverletzung) & Noah Fichtl (Oberschenkelverletzung).
Position: 1., 12 points
With every youth domestic league season come two derbies against 1859+1 Munich (which the U-23s will also experience, as 1859+1’s senior team is now in the Regionalliga Bayern). This one was held at home, in which Bayern were unable to use star striker Vedad Turbic or star offensive signing Kemi Seudie due to injury. This did not cow Bayern, though, as they flew out of the gates, bagging the first goal in the 8th minute before taking a 3:0 lead in the 16th minute. They were then pegged back by two goals from the visitors, though, with the score at 3-2 after just 23 minutes.
Unfortunately, the game calmed down after that. There was one notable shot from substitute Hiseni just before halftime, then he hit the bar after half-time, Linus Ludwig nearly scored a fortunate goal from outside the area before right back Herber nearly sealed the deal late on. But it was all Bayern throughout the match, with the visitors not threatening nearly enough and lucky not to lose by multiple goals. In the end, the win was enough to extend Lars Bender’s U-17s’ perfect start to the season to 4 games.
