With a joint practice against the Cincinnati Bengals looming, the Chicago Bears held a spirited and live practice at Halas Hall today, and at least two fights broke out!
CHGO’s Greg Braggs shared that “Austin Booker and Cole Kmet had to be separated after a physical run in 11-on-11s.”
And the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs said, “In 1-on-1 pass rush, (rookie defensive tackle) Jayden Loving rode (rookie center) Logan Jones straight back, and after the rep Jones took a swipe at Loving, and it was on.”
Some good perspective about the fight from Michal Dwojak from Bears Insider, who shared that it was “nothing serious, there was joking after.”
Biggs also pointed out the practice’s physicality when he wrote that, “They’re blowing the whistle on wrapup, but the live play is legit. “
It may have been a physical practice, but we’re just talking ’bout practice.
With Braxton Jones back, he was with the first string at left tackle, but Theo Benedet was filling in there at times today. Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills Jr. were both getting reps at right tackle behind Darnell Wright. Amegadjie left practice with a trainer after an injury.
Head coach Ben Johnson calls the left tackle competition wide open, but Ozzy Trapilo isn’t quite ready to get in that mix yet. Trapilo is still just doing drills, and Johnson said he’s “on his own timeline.” But he added, “Physically, we feel really good about where he’s at, or else we wouldn’t have brought him off PUP. Now, it’s a race to see how quickly we can rebuild the confidence.”
A few other nuggets from the day.
Safety Xavier Woods was out there today after leaving Saturday’s game with a groin injury, so that was some good sleuthing by our guy Ryan Droste!
Rookie wide receiver Zavion Thomas was back at practice today.
But no Tyson Bagent, who has a hamstring issue from Saturday.
Tyrique Stevenson is also still out, making it a week since he practiced. (link)
Ben Johnson called Kyle Monangai “week to week” and had nothing of note to say about Kyler Gordon.
The Bears will have a light practice tomorrow before flying to Cincinnati for practice on Thursday. The two teams play on Saturday.
