For better or worse, all the conversation around teams in the NFL is about their quarterback play, especially with the Cleveland Browns. As one of our readers in DBN’s Feed noted, the stars on the Browns defense needed to do a better job in Week 1 as well, but quarterbacks get the lion’s share of credit and blame in the NFL.
Despite once again sticking his foot in his mouth in a press conference, not as bad as the one right before he got named the starter, Deshaun Watson will take the first snap of
the game for the Browns. Many fans and media believe that Watson is on a short leash, with the home opener in Week 3 a dividing line of sorts.
Given how HC Todd Monken has backed Watson, it is possible his leash is much longer than many think, but Shedeur Sanders is waiting in the wings. Cleveland legend Bernie Kosar weighed in on whether Watson will be pulled soon and what he’s seen from the young quarterback that would replace him:
Kosar tends toward the positives when talking about the Browns and players in general. The former Miami and Cleveland star quarterback is often around the team, talking to coaches, players, and club personnel, including filming content for a project of his own during this year’s training camp.
With a report that the Browns will sign Sanders’ former Colorado teammate, WR Jimmy Horn Jr., some believe that is an indcator of a plan to move Sanders back into the starting lineup soon.
Last year, as a fifth round rookie and the third quarterback to start games for Cleveland, Sanders completed 57% of his passes for exactly 1,400 yards, with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The complexities of Monken’s system and Watson’s experience seemed to lead to Sanders chasing in the quarterback competition all offseason, but the veteran struggled mightily, including in presnap process, in Week 1.
Will we get a chance to see what Sanders can do and if Kosar is right about him soon? That’ll be up to Watson’s performance and Monken’s opinion.
