The calendar has officially flipped to October, but the Yankees need a lot to go their way to play much deeper into it than tonight. Their backs are against the wall after blowing their 1-0 lead to Boston and failing to take it back in the ninth inning, despite Aroldis Chapman’s best attempt to revert back to his Yankee days in the postseason. Stranding the bases loaded with no outs situation that New York found themselves in last night will go down as one of the weakest performances from an offense
in recent memory, but they can lessen the sting if they push this series to a do-or-die Game 3 on Thursday.
We’ll start our coverage for the day off with some reactions to Game 1, beginning with Matt awarding Max Fried the Yankees Player of the Game honor for his ace-like performance on the mound before Jeremy hones in on that ninth inning in his immediate reaction to the loss. Sam covers the other Game 1’s around the league and highlights who else is on the brink of elimination, John takes us back to one of the original moments that led to the formation of Major League Baseball on this day, and then Matt returns to take us to the end of the 2000 regular season for our Diary series. Check back in later on for the official Game 2 lineup announcements, and then pop into our game thread to talk about all of the action.

1. Will we see a Game 3 in this series, and will any of the other matchups push the Wild Card Round to its maximum?
2. Where would you rank each of the ace performances that we saw across the opening day of the postseason among each other?
