Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio publicly backed manager Xabi Alonso after Real Madrid’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.
In a game where Real Madrid looked more impressive
than they have in recent weeks, regardless of what the scoreline suggests, Asencio was one of their bright performers.
He was subbed off in the second half for a more offensive approach, but Asencio’s defending was key in defending against such a dangerous team.
When asked about Alonso at the end of the game, he said: “We’re behind our manager 100%. We understand his message in the dressing room.
“It’s an unusual situation, and the players needed to change their attitude. And we saw that change today.”
Asencio was also asked about the incident where he was pulled down inside Manchester City’s penalty area, and the penalty was not given.
To that, he said: “Man City players held Rudiger and me during the corner in the penalty area, and then if that happens to them, it’s a penalty.”
Asencio would hope to keep his starting place for as long as possible, and his performance against Manchester City would have impressed Alonso, as they now prepare to face Alaves on the weekend.
