The Royals announced as their first official trade of deadline day (the Bubic trade has not yet been officially announced by the team) that they had acquired reliever Nolan Hoffman from the Phillies for minor league reliever Manuel Colón.
Hoffman, 27, has pitched a handful of innings at the big league level over the past two years. That includes 4.2 innings this year, where he has a 3.86 ERA but has walked more
than he has struck out. He has a 4.72 ERA in AAA while striking out more than a batter per inning. He is likely depth to help the Royals as they continue to churn through relievers due to ineffectiveness and injury.
Connor Seabold was transferred to the 60-day Injured List to make room on the 40-man roster for Hoffman.
Colón is a 19-year-old who had a good strikeout-walk ratio in the Arizona Complex League and had just received a promotion to Columbus as a reward for his efforts. He also had a 5.27 ERA and struggled with BABIP; he has allowed a higher than .400 BABIP in total during his professional career despite the strikeouts and a high groundball rate.
