Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl knows exactly what awaits his team in Madrid. Ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League showdown against Atlético Madrid, Eberl has acknowledged the enormous challenge facing Vincent Kompany‘s injury-hit squad.
Atlético are among the most difficult opponents Bayern could encounter away from home, particularly at the Metropolitano, where Diego Simeone’s side will look to make life uncomfortable from the opening whistle.
Eberl believes Bayern will need to demonstrate
the same resilience they have been forced to show throughout a difficult stretch of the season.
“It’s definitely one of the most complicated away games you can have in the Champions League, against an extremely difficult and high-quality opponent, where we have to bring the resilience we’ve had to show in recent weeks onto the pitch. It’s a team that will really challenge us a lot. We’re still going there to try and achieve the best possible result,” Eberl said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
There is certainly no shortage of obstacles for Bayern. The injuries to Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari have further depleted the available options, while Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz are still working toward their returns.
Nevertheless, Bayern are not traveling to Madrid simply to survive 90 minutes. Two consecutive Champions League draws have made this an important opportunity to get their European campaign moving in the right direction.
Eberl understands the difficulty of the assignment, but the ambition remains clear: Bayern want a result. Now they have to go out and earn it.
