San Diego Wave announced on Thursday morning they have signed forward Trinity Byars to a new contract through the 2028 season. Byars’ contract was previously set to expire at the end of 2026 making her an unrestricted free agent.
“My time in San Diego thus far has been incredible and I’m really excited to continue my career with this club,” said Byars in a statement. “I’m grateful to the team for the trust they’ve placed in me and I’m looking forward to continuing to grow while helping San Diego however
I can in order to win a championship together.”
Byars has been an important part of the Wave’s success in 2026 despite only having made one start for the Wave this season. Across nine appearances the dynamic forward has scored four goals with the first-place squad, and kept opposing defenses honest late in matches.
The 23-year-old was one of the first players actively in college with the University of Texas to sign with an NWSL team without a college draft in November 2024. She had suffered a serious knee injury in her senior season, but the Wave still signed her and immediately placed her on the season ending injury list.
Byars became available for selection in the Wave’s final match of the 2025 NWSL regular season, and debuted as a late substitute in the Wave’s NWSL playoff loss against the Portland Thorns.
“Trinity is an important part of this club, and we’re excited to have her continue her career in San Diego,” said General Manager and Sporting Director Camille Ashton in a statement. “She has consistently demonstrated her quality in front of goal and her ability to deliver in key moments, and we look forward to seeing her continue to make a significant impact for this club in the years ahead.”
The Wave play their next match at home on Saturday, July 11, against their Southern California rivals, Angel City FC.
