The Carolina Panthers have announced that Jaycee Horn (quadriceps) and Mike Jackson (groin) have been placed on injured reserve. That ends their season for at least the next four games, likely longer in at least Horn’s case. For those keeping track at home, Horn and Jackson formed one of the more formidable cornerback duos in the NFL and were the top two defensive backs on the Panthers team. Fifth year veteran Akayleb Evans, third year veteran Chau Smith-Wade, and rookie 4th round pick Will Lee III
make up the entirety of the team’s current cornerback room.
Evans, Smith-Wade, and Lee have all flashed higher end talent in the past. Lee earned the starting nickel corner spot this offseason as a rookie and has had a number of near-highlight worthy plays paired with his fair share of rookie blunders. They all make for good depth at this point in their careers, but look for the Panthers to seek out veteran help in advance of this week’s Sunday Night Football match up against the Detroit Lions.
The veteran cornerback market is understandably thin at this point in the season. You have talented-but-injury-prone guys like Marshon Lattimore on the one hand, over-the-hill-journeymen like C.J. Goodwin (36) on the other, and guys with every other story in between. Dicaprio Bootle, who has not been on a 53-man roster since spending part of the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, may be the only veteran corner on the market currently with any direct experience with Ejiro Evero in Charlotte. Other free agent options include Bene Benwikere (35), (Eric Davis (58), Chris Gamble (43), Captain Munnerlyn (38, and still in Charlotte), Josh Norman (38), Melvin White (36). Second year corner and former undrafted free agent Corey Thornton is also currently on the team’s practice squad.
The long story short is that pickings are slim.
