Barcelona spent the summer trying to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid but were unable to land the striker as Los Colchoneros refused to sell the Argentina international.
There’s been talk that Barcelona could try for Alvarez again in the coming windows but Deco has suggested that the club’s interest in the forward has now ended.
“The idea was always to bring in a mobile number nine, with the ability to link up with teammates, and Julián was one of those players,” he said, per Mundo Deportivo.
“It wasn’t possible; we made an offer. The club has always said they wouldn’t sell him, and we’ve had to look for other solutions.
“Gabriel Jesus wasn’t in our plans, and the moment we decided that Julián was impossible, we started looking for solutions, and Gabriel was the perfect fit for us.The idea hasn’t changed; it was to find a player with the same profile.”
Barcelona have gone on to enjoy a stunning start to the season without Alvarez, with Raphinha leading the charge as the club’s No. 9.
