Newcastle United has finally landed the experienced midfielder Matthias Jaissle, completing a major piece of its summer rebuild after the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
The Magpies entered Monday increasingly confident of signing Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with the Daily Mail’s Simon Jones reporting that the clubs were “continuing to edge closer to agreement” over a transfer valued at approximately £50 million (€58 million).
Only hours later, Fabrizio Romano confirmed
the breakthrough. Newcastle has reached a verbal agreement with City to sign Gonzalez for £47 million (€54 million) guaranteed plus another £3 million (€3.5 million) in potential add-ons.
“BREAKING: Newcastle reach verbal agreement with Man City for Nico González, here we go!” Romano reported. “Understand fee will be £47m plus £3m add-ons, green light from the player after progress revealed overnight. Nico, ready to join #NUFC project where he will be a key player.”
The agreement completes a rapid acceleration in negotiations after The Athletic’s David Ornstein first revealed last week that Newcastle had opened exploratory talks with City. Gonzalez initially appeared determined to remain in Manchester and fight for his place, but his position shifted as Newcastle increased its efforts to convince him.
City also cleared the path for his departure. Gonzalez was an unused substitute in Sunday’s Premier League victory over Bournemouth, with defender Marc Guehi used in midfield instead, while the club simultaneously agreed an £86 million (€100 million) deal for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The 24-year-old joined City from Porto for €60 million (£52 million) in February 2025. He made 41 appearances across all competitions last season, starting 28 times, but struggled to establish himself as an automatic starter.
Newcastle can offer precisely that status. After selling Guimaraes to Arsenal and Tonali to Tottenham, Jaissle has been left rebuilding around youngsters including Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Lewis Miley. Gonzalez now arrives as the experienced centerpiece of that new-look midfield.
Crucially, Romano’s report goes beyond the increasingly optimistic updates published earlier Monday: the clubs have now agreed the financial package and Gonzalez has given Newcastle the green light.
Barring a late collapse during the remaining formalities, Newcastle finally has its new midfielder.
