Three former New York Giants head coaches headline the Coaches Subcommittee’s ballot for the 2027 Hall Of Fame class.
Tom Coughlin, Bill Belichick, and Dan Reeves, along with Mike Shannahan and Mike Holmgren, make up this year’s Head coach nominees for induction into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.
Giants’ fans will obviously have a soft spot for Coughlin, who was the Giants’ head coach from 2004 to 2015, winning two Super Bowls over that span. He was also the Jacksonville Jaguars’ first head coach,
coaching them from 1995 to 2002. He took the Jaguars to the AFC Championship game in 1996 (their second season in existence) and again in 1999 on the strength of a 14-2 season. He was named Coach Of The Year following the 1996 season and Coughlin has the distinction of being one of just two coaches to beat fellow nominee Bill Belichick in the Super Bowl — and did so twice.
Belichick was a coach for the Giants from 1979 to 1990, coaching special teams and linebackers before being named defensive coordinator by Bill Parcells in 1985. Belichick made his name as one of the NFL’s keenest defensive minds, and his gameplan from the Giants’ win over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl 25 is already in the Hall Of Fame. Belichick went on to be the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets, but found almost unprecedented success with the New England Patriots. There he won six championships, tied for the most all time, but was also plagued by scandal.
Dan Reeves coached the Giants from 1993 to 1996, and was named AP Coach Of The Year following the Giants’ 11-5 record. His subsequent seasons weren’t nearly as successful, but Reeves was one of the most successful coaches in NFL history. He’s one of just 13 head coaches to win (at least) 200 games between his time with the Denver Broncos (1981 to 1992), Giants (1993-1996), and Atlanta Falcons (1997 – 2003). Reeves passed away on January 1, 2022.
Only one head coach can be inducted into the Hall Of Fame each year, and the former Giants’ coaches face stiff competition from Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan.
