Manuel Neuer’s massive mistake on the opening kickoff vs. FC Augsburg allowed the home side to score just 8.4 seconds into the game for the fastest goal in the history of the Bundesliga.
As Robin Fellhauer revealed, the play was the result of some predictable play from Bayern Munich and some hard work and determination from FC Augsburg.
While Neuer is bearing the brunt of the blame, Fellhauer revealed that Alphonso Davies made little effort to shield him from making a play as well.
The FC Augsburg star
was not the only one shifting some of the focus away from Manuel Neuer, though. Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl indicated that the veteran is not in danger of losing his starting job over the play.
“There is absolutely no reason to question anything just because Manuel has made a mistake now. Jonas is developing exceptionally well, and Manu has played a very, very big part in that. He is still our number one. Without wanting to make too much of it, the way we have developed Jonas Urbig despite having a world-class goalkeeper like Manuel Neuer is quite remarkable. The combination of Jonas now having this standing, already gaining this experience, and having performed excellently in his appearances for the national team is truly exceptional. So far, the plan we had in mind is working out,” Eberl told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
It would be harsh to strip Neuer of the starting role after that play (though there are many calling for it). However, mistakes like that will test the patience of the club’s coaching staff and bosses if they continue. Can Neuer rein it in?
