If there is one thing Bayern Munich should never lack, it is belief.
Asked whether he believes Bayern Munich can win the Champions League this season, the answer was emphatic:
“Absolutely. We’ve always had the chance to reach the final. Our team has always been close. I believe we have the quality, the mentality, and the tactical spirit to beat any opponent. We weren’t far off from advancing, and I think maybe the third time’s the charm, and we’re working on it,” Neuer told Sky Germany’s Kerry Hau
(as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That confidence is exactly what Bayern Munich needs heading into another European campaign.
The Champions League has been a frustrating competition for Bayern Munich in recent seasons. The team has repeatedly come close to reaching the final, only to fall short when the margins become razor thin. But rather than viewing those disappointments as evidence that Bayern Munich cannot get over the hump, this perspective sees them as proof that the team is capable of competing at the highest level.
Quality? Bayern Munich has it. Mentality? The squad believes it has that, too. Tactical flexibility? That will be one of Vincent Kompany’s biggest challenges.
Now comes the difficult part: turning that belief into results when the Champions League knockout rounds arrive.
Maybe the third time really will be the charm. Bayern Munich certainly believes it can be.
