Former boxing champion Ricky Hatton’s cause of death was revealed as suicide by the coroner during a hearing held in England on Thursday.
The details surrounding his death were part of a formal inquest
after Hatton, 46, was found unresponsive by his manager Paul Speak on Sept. 14 after the British boxer failed to attend an event where he was scheduled to make an appearance.
“The provisional cause of death is given as hanging,” Manchester South senior coroner Alison Mutch said in a statement (via ESPN) during a brief 10-minute hearing.
Authorities stated that the last time family members saw Hatton came two days earlier on Sept. 12 and he was reportedly “well.” After missing his scheduled event, Speak showed up to Hatton’s house to take him to the airport for a flight to Dubai.
At the time, Hatton had planned for a comeback fight in December after last fighting in 2012.
Family members said that Hatton was “in a good place” prior to his death as he prepared for his comeback fight while also spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Known as “The Hitman” in the ring, Hatton was a beloved figure in the boxing community for his aggressive style and entertaining fights throughout his career. Hatton captured titles in two different weight classes while amassing an impressive record before retiring from the sport in 2012.
He racked up a perfect 43-0 record before tasting defeat for the first time when he suffered a knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather back in 2007. Hatton then scored two wins including a finish of Paulie Malignaggi before he fell to Manny Pacquiao in 2009.
Numerous athletes and celebrities mourned Hatton’s death following his tragic passing in September.
Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, boxing champion Tyson Fury and soccer star Wayne Rooney all attended Hatton’s funeral in October with thousands more lining the streets to pay their respects to the fallen boxing star.
