Bayern Munich’s trip to Cyprus to take on Pafos FC in the Champions League had the potential to be a real banana skin for the reining Bundesliga champions, but the German Rekordmeister took care of business handedly with a 5-1 win. The three points sees that Vincent Kompany’s side continue their perfect start to the season, having one all nine of their matches across all competitions thus far.
Harry Kane once again spearheaded Bayern’s attacking return with a brace in the 5-1 win over Pafos and a first
Bayern goal for Nicolas Jackson and single goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Michael Olise rounded out the scoring for Die Roten and there was hardly anything Manuel Neuer could do to stop Mislav Oršić’s strike in the 45th minute. A clean sheet certainly would have been the preferred outcome for Kompany, but the Croatian’s strike was no more than the Cypriote outfit deserved on what was always going to be a tall task for them facing Bayern.
Speaking after the match, Kane highlighted Jackson’s performance on what was only the Chelsea loanee’s second start for Bayern. The Senegal international opened his Bayern scoring account with his effort in the 31st minute and also provided an assist for Guerreiro’s goal in the 20th minute. He had other chances as well and easily could’ve scored more than just once.
“He was fantastic today. He got a goal, an assist and was unlucky not to score another towards the end. I’m really happy for him. We’ll need him this season to achieve our goals,” Kane enthused of his striking partner (via @iMiaSanMia).
Quite arguably, up until the Pafos win, Jackson’s appearances had been tame at best, so his efforts in Cyprus are certainly a breath of fresh air for Kompany and the rest of the squad. As Kane alluded to, he will be needed as Bayern push across all three fronts for the remainder of the season and it’s unfortunate that they will be without him when he joins up with the Senegal national team for the African Cup of Nations this winter.
Hopefully more performances like the one against Pafos are on tap for Jackson.
Bayern Munich traveled to Cyprus to face a very feisty and game Pafos FC side in the Champions League and the game, well, went as expected.
The Bavarians dominated from start to finish and received another thoroughly dominant performance from the attacking group. And, yup, Harry Kane had a brace.
