Carolina’s 40-point win over Central Arkansas was exactly the kind of performance needed to establish confidence in a new-look team; the Tar Heels looked like a cohesive unit and didn’t play down to their opponent.
If you’re like me, it was enough to give you a sense that this season might be different. Tonight, we’ll get a sense of how different.
In four seasons under Hubert Davis, Carolina has gone 2-9 in November games against power conference teams. That includes a loss at The Phog last season in which
the Tar Heels rallied from a 20-point deficit to take the lead, then let it slip away in the final two minutes. It was Carolina’s fifth straight loss to Kansas, with the previous four coming in the NCAA Tournament.
Bucking the trend of dropping tough early-season matchups while knocking off a team that’s been a specter for UNC for the better part of two decades would go a long way toward showing that this Tar Heels squad is legit.
