FanDuel Odds & Thoughts
Hawaii/California: Rainbow Warriors +3.5, O/U 55.5
- In the age of opt outs and the transfer portal, deciphering the odds for these bowl games has never been tougher. That goes double time for a Cal program that fired head coach Justin Wilcox two weeks ago, and has since hired Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi to replace him.
- Cal’s likely to see some players opt for the transfer portal, but one name that won’t appear on the open market? Star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. The freshman quarterback from Hawaii threw for 3,117 passing yards and 17 touchdowns in his debut season, and of course is returning to his home state for this bowl.
- As if that alone wasn’t enough for headlines, offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich is the interim coach for the Golden Bears. Yes, the same Rolovich that played quarterback and coached for the Warriors, leading Hawaii to its only ever MWC championship game appearance in 2019 before leaving for Washington State.
- He’ll face Hawaii head coach Timmy Chang, the two sharing a quarterback room in their playing days, vying for the same starting spot. Spicy!
- Ironically, Rolovich’s debut as Hawaii head coach came against Cal in 2016.
- Hawaii is led by their own star freshman quarterback in Micah Alejado, who won freshman of the year in the MWC. His star receivers Jackson Harris and Pofele Ashlock are ones to watch. Hopefully! You never know with the transfer portal these days. Keep an eye on roster movement prior to this game for both teams.
