Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey has been named the PFA Player of the Year for the 2024-25 WSL season. Mariona had already won the WSL Player of the Season award, while also being named the Arsenal Women’s Supporter’s Club Player of the Season, and the Arsenal.com Women’s Player of the Season. Mariona, who was also nominated for the Ballon d’Or, scored 9 times and assisted 5 goals in the WSL, as well as scoring 7 goals and adding two assists in the Champions League, which Arsenal, of course, won for the second
time (the only in the land). The award, like other PFA awards, is voted on by players in the league, and thus Mariona has been deemed to be the best player in the league by her colleagues.
There was further Arsenal representation in the team of the season, where Mariona was joined by club captain Kim Little, striker Alessia Russo, and right back Emily Fox. Fox and Russo have also been nominated for the Ballon d’Or, as have Frida Maanum, Leah Williamson, and Chloe Kelly.
Finally, Olivia Smith, who Arsenal signed for a then-record £1m in July was named the PFA Young Player of the Year. While at Liverpool, Smith scored a team best 7 goals. As some Liverpool fan try to claim the award, I would remind you that your club sold the player to Arsenal (European Champions), and your team is now managed by Gareth Taylor.
