After the dismissal of Addison Lynch, the Denver Broncos were in the market for a new defensive backs coach. According to multiple reports, the Broncos are expected to hire former USC Trojans defensive back coach Doug Belk to their staff to replace Lynch. The franchise boasts one of the best secondaries in the league and Belk will join the ranks to lead one of the deepest and most talented defensive back groups in the National Football League.
After spending the last two years with the Trojans, Belk previously served as defensive coordinator for the Houston Cougars. Of not, he was also a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama for three years and was the cornerbacks coach at West Virginia from 2017-2018. He certainly brings extensive experience and hard work put in at the collegiate level.
This move marks the first outside addition to Denver’s coaching staff this offseason. With that in mind, Belk’s addition also may have some impact on their draft plans. Standout USC safeties Kamari Ramsey and Bishop Fitzgerald are two of the top names at the position in the 2026 NFL Draft. While not a major need for the Broncos, it’s important to remember both Brandon Jones and J.L. Skinner are entering the final years of their contracts.
This will definitely put them on Denver’s draft radar. There is no doubt having Belk on staff will certainly give them quality insight on those two. Other Trojans defensive prospects in this year’s draft include defensive end Anthony Lucas, cornerbacks Prophet Brown and DJ Harvey, and linebacker Eric Gentry. Additionally, he also coached AJ Haulcy for two seasons in Houston, LSU’s standout safety who projects as a Top 64 draft selection and would be a tremendous fit for Denver.
Welcome to the Mile High City, Coach Belk!
