Rutgers women’s soccer continued their strong start to the season with a 2-0 win over Fairfield. Although Fairfield led Rutgers in total shots 16-11 and shots on goal 7-3, Rutgers maximized their chances and posted a clean sheet to earn their second straight shutout victory.
Nata Ramirez scored her first goal for Rutgers just ten minutes into the game. After a corner kick settled play, Patricia Tsokos found Ramirez at the right wing, where she lofted the ball over the Fairfield goalkeeper’s head for the opening
goal.
Just before halftime, the Scarlet Knights were able to double their lead. Olivia Russomanno sent in a corner kick from the left corner, which was deflected by Fairfield’s goalkeeper. However, true freshman Lindsey Hailey was waiting just outside the goal to send in the rebound for her first Rutgers and collegiate goal.
With a 2-0 lead at the half, Rutgers locked down Fairfield on defense and controlled the second-half possession to secure the victory. Star goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer made her season debut, posting her 17th career shutout with seven saves in the game. Bodmer now has 153 saves in her storied Rutgers career.
In addition to Ramirez and Hailey scoring their first goals with the Scarlet Knights, Hailey played all 90 minutes for the second straight contest. Julia Joseph and Emily Johns made their first career starts, while Riley Morris made her season debut.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action this Friday, going on the road for the first time to take on the Princeton Tigers. The game is set to begin at 5 PM at Roberts Stadium on the Princeton campus.
