It was a shock this summer when promising freshman Tabitha Betson announced she would be returning to Australia to pursue professional basketball.
Colorado had recruited her out of IMG Academy and was one
of two freshman, alongside Kennedy Sanders, JR Payne trusted with a rotation spot.
Betson, a 6’2 playmaking forward, took some time to adjust to college ball but her talent popped on the court. She could score from all three levels, played strong inside and was clearly educated in basketball, with a strong positional sense and a good feel for the game.
CU fans were happy to have such a well-rounded player to build around in the coming years.
Betson’s departure seemed more personal than anything else. She’d been abroad for over five years, playing high school ball in Florida and college here, and wanted to be back home for some time.
She’s now back in Boulder, announcing Saturday on Instagram:
It’s unclear when exactly Betson will rejoin the Colorado rotation. She may need time to get back into the speed of things, catch up with an almost entirely new roster — only Sanders, Jade Masogayo and JoJo Nworie return from last season — and earn her place on a much improved team.
