Liverpool Women kicked off their 2026-27 season knowing that their first three matches would be something of a barometer for their season hopes and expectations, as they would open against newly promoted Charlton before taking on mid-table Tottenham and then defending champions Manchester City.
After a disappointing start but strong finish to last season, a win in the first game and four points to show for the run was the minimum expectation if the target was building on the second half of 2025-26
and hopefully at least finishing in the top half of the FA Women’s Super League. After two games, they’ve maned exactly up—now next up is City.
“To still be unbeaten is important for us and I think the players deserve a lot of credit for the passion, desire, and quality they are showing,” head coach Gareth Taylor said ahead of Friday night’s City test. “I felt we really took the game to Tottenham to try to get the goals that we needed and we just need to improve that final decision slightly.
“I felt our levels were very good in many ways and if there is a slight criticism it’s just that final pass and final shot [but] the signs are really good from this team and we look forward to our next challenge, which is a tough away game at Manchester City. We want to be really aggressive with and without the ball. That has got to be our way.”
After this week’s league match against City, the Reds turn their attention to the League Cup where they kick off group play against Sunderland West End in a game they will be heavily favoured to win—and in convincing fashion. Then comes the local derby, with Everton visiting Anfield on Sunday, September 27th.
