Listen.
The best pitcher in baseball for May was Cristopher Sanchez. His scoreless month set a standard of excellence that he can’t possibly live up to again. That means, even in starts like he had the other night where he only allowed two runs, it made one wistful for that month of May.
Today, facing the Brewers lineup in a rubber match, Sanchez was hit around a bit, which wasn’t ideal considering the Phillies’ lineup weren’t exactly up to snuff. The result? A loss for Sanchez and a long, quiet ride
home.
It also didn’t help that Kyle Harrison was opposing Sanchez and he has been outstanding this season. He held the Phillies down in the first inning while the Brewers had Jackson Chourio, who has been red hot lately.
The second and third innings were two pitchers settling into their groove, but in the fourth, the Brewers got to Sanchez again. William Contreras and Gary Sanchez led off the inning with singles before Luis Rengifo grounded into a fielder’s choice that nailed Contreras at home. Blake Perkins of all people stepped to the plate after that a blasted a pitch for a three run home run.
That was basically all she wrote for offense the rest of the game. Harrison and the Milwaukee bullpen scattered a few hits here and there, but no kind of real threat materialized for them. The scoring that Milwaukee did was all they needed and the series swayed in their favor.
The offense not hitting on the Sunday of a road trip is not surprising as it’s happening more and more often. There were some things that happened in the game that should be a part of a larger discussion (ahem – TREA TURNER!), but this was just another blah game. Hopefully the homestand coming up is better.
