Newcastle United has provided its clearest update yet on plans to change and modernize the club crest, confirming supporters will vote on the final design before a new badge is introduced in time for the 2027-28 season.
After launching a review of the crest last year, the club said it has completed two years of research and consultation, with the next phase beginning in August through supporter workshops before a formal poll opens to eligible fans, same as the last time.
Newcastle stressed the project
is intended to evolve the current badge rather than replace it with an entirely new and rebranded identity, arguing the existing crest, introduced in 1988, is no longer suited to use in modern digital platforms, broadcasting and merchandise.
“We have been transparent about a basic challenge: our current crest, designed in the late Eighties, struggles to perform in a modern setting,” the club said.
According to Newcastle, 84 percent of supporters surveyed favored updating the existing crest instead of creating a completely new design. As a result, the club confirmed several iconic features will remain, including the castle, black-and-white shield, seahorses and ribbon, while also ruling out adopting a generic circular badge.
The Telegraph first leaked the supposed new badge, or at least one of the alternatives, back in May 2025 and… welp, judge for yourself.
The Magpies described the process as one driven by supporter feedback, saying fans consistently asked it to “simplify and protect what already exists” rather than pursue wholesale change.
This time, eligible supporters, including season ticket holders and other members of the club platforms, along with fans who attended at least two Newcastle United Women matches during the 2025-26 season, will be invited to vote when the poll opens in early August.
Newcastle said the updated crest will be designed to preserve its historic identity, adding that every decision has been guided by the objective of protecting the symbols supporters value most.
