The Seattle Seahawks defense went the entire season without forcing an opposition fumble. They ended that drought in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals, turning not one but two forced fumbles into touchdowns.
Both involved the same players: Tyrice Knight on the strip-sack of Jacoby Brissett, DeMarcus Lawrence running the ball back for six points.
Here’s one scoop…
And a double scoop…
Lawrence doubled his career touchdown total in a matter of one half, and entered himself into exclusive NFL company.
Returning two fumbles for touchdowns is unusual
‘Tank’ is just the fourth player in NFL history to take back two fumbles for touchdowns in the same game. When you reduce the time frame to the modern era, aka after the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, only Jeremy Chinn has matched Lawrence’s accomplishment. The former Carolina Panthers safety and current Las Vegas Raiders starter probably has the “cool stat” tiebreaker by taking consecutive offensive fumbles back for touchdowns against the Minnesota Vikings in the 2020 season.
The other players on this list are Fred Evans of the 1948 Chicago Bears and Al Nesser of the Akron Pros in 1920. When we have to go that far back in the sport’s history to find the other instances, you know this is a collector’s item.
Lawrence has been a strong contributor for the Seahawks all season, and the former Dallas Cowboys star looks like he hasn’t lost a step at 33 years old.
