Commanders Face a Different Eagles Team — and a Loss Could Cost More Than a Game
[T]he Commanders seemed to be teetering on the verge of irrelevancy. Their own surge into momentary greatness was snuffed out by the Eagles on their own road to glory
during the 2024 NFC Championship Game, and the following campaign’s forgettable 5-12 record signaled that change would be required for D.C. to host a revived winner.
[I]t’s worth diving into which iteration of the Eagles they should expect.
Even though they weren’t exactly the Greatest Show on Turf over their last few seasons, their scoring attack has plunged to 15.8 points per game over their five outings, all of which Philadelphia lost. Jalen Hurts’ calf injury and subsequent blood clot discovery in Week 5 did no one any favors, as he’s unlikely to play again this season while undergoing treatment, leaving backup quarterback Tanner McKee to perform without suddenly-retired, Canton-bound offensive tackle Lane Johnson.
We now know the Commanders can hold their own on the ground with their versatile middle linebackers and blitzing options in the secondary, and this week looks like a great opportunity to prove they know exactly who they are.
The Commanders’ Ticking Clock
Aside from not having split their annual season series with the Eagles yet, anyone betting on the Commanders assumes they spent their week off taking a long, hard look at the opportunity presented by the underperforming division ahead of them.
Despite only clinching a win once, aWeek 3 upset over the Seattle Seahawks, the Commanders still have fewer losses than the Eagles, thanks to theembarrassing tiehanging on to the end of their numerical record. And unlike the strung-together New York Giants and the second-place Dallas Cowboys, Washington still has some semblance of a defense and their franchise quarterback at its helm.
A loss Sunday would drop Washington to 1-5-1, hand Philadelphia a sweep of the season series, and leave the Commanders with just one victory through seven games. With the November 10 trade deadline approaching, Adam Peters would also face a growing question about whether this roster deserves additional help or whether Washington should begin prioritizing the future. That’s a difficult position for a team that entered the season expecting to compete for the division.

Commanders can’t afford to overlook Eagles playmakers
RB Saquon Barkley
The Commanders will have their hands full with Saquon Barkley. The star running back has historically given Washington fits, totaling 1,305 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns in 13 regular-season matchups against the Commanders. He also rushed for 118 yards and three rushing touchdowns in the 2024 NFC Championship Game.
Barkley’s history against Washington is particularly concerning when you consider the Commanders’ defensive struggles this season. Washington has allowed opponents to convert 44.4% of their third-down attempts. Even worse, the Commanders rank nearly dead last in red-zone defense, allowing touchdowns on 81.8% of opposing trips inside the 20-yard line.
Barkley entered Friday listed as a limited participant in practice due to his hamstring and back injury, but he’ll officially suit up on Sunday night amid limited weapons around the rest of the offense.

NFC East roundup | Commanders prepare for primetime
Needs improvement: Philadelphia’s defense has disappeared in key moments in several games this season, and Monday night was no exception. The No. 27-ranked defense is the first in NFL history to record three or fewer takeaways and eight or fewer sacks through seven games.
Looking ahead to the Commanders: Philadelphia is also riding a five-game losing streak for the first time since 2016. None of the previous 20 teams to lose five consecutive games made the playoffs, and only one finished without a losing record (1974).
Washington Commanders
Looking ahead to the Philadelphia Eagles: The last time Washington and Philadelphia faced off was in Week 1, when the Eagles defeated the Commanders by two points. Much has changed in seven weeks, however, most notably with the Eagles’ offense. Jalen Hurts (blood clots) has been replaced by Tanner McKee, significantly changing the game plan for the Commanders’ defense. Smith is also inactive, further limiting Philadelphia’s passing attack.
The Commanders’ near-comeback in the second half against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7 should provide some comfort that the team can overcome adversity, especially after losing Terry McLaurin to a season-ending injury. Van Jefferson has been elevated from the practice squad to help fill the void, although Stefon Diggs will be the de facto top target.

Answering 5 Questions Commanders Fans Are Asking
Can Washington still climb back into the NFC East race?
It’s not out of reach. The Giants lead at 4-2-1, Dallas is 3-4, Philadelphia is 2-5 and Washington sits at 1-4-1, two and a half games back. The Commanders are 0-2-1 in the division, though, so tiebreakers are working against them.
That makes Sunday a swing game. A win drops the Eagles further and keeps Washington in the hunt as the Giants sit on a bye. A loss leaves Quinn’s group 1-5-1 heading into November, and the referendum on Dan Quinn gets louder.

Eagles weaknesses the Commanders can exploit
Cooper DeJean’s missed tackles in space
Cooper DeJean has missed 12 tackles this season, the most among 94 qualifying safeties, and carries a 54.3 overall grade, according to PFF. Quarterbacks have a 106.9 passer rating throwing into his coverage.
That’s an invitation for quick throws that turn into chunk gains. Stefon Diggs leads Washington with four touchdown catches, and rookie WR Antonio Williams has a 74.0 PFF grade with zero drops. Get either one the ball on the move and make DeJean finish the play.

Cowboys have a franchise-record 14 straight games with 20 or more points allowed
Via NBC Sports research, the Cowboys have allowed 20 or more points in 14 straight games. It’s the longest active streak in the league, and it’s the longest streak in franchise history.
Although on the surface the Cowboys have drawn a favorable opponent on Sunday in the 2-5 Cardinals. But, in recent years, the Cardinals have been a spur in the Dallas saddle. Arizona is 8-1 against the Cowboys, dating back to 2008. The Cardinals also have won four in a row against Dallas — and four in a row at AT&T Stadium.

Eagles roster news: 2 moves announced ahead of Commanders game
ELIJAH MITCHELL
Saquon Barkley will play against the Commanders despite being listed under “did not participate” on Wednesday and Thursday before being upgraded to limited on Friday. It remains to be seen how much of a workload he can handle; Barkley was clearly playing through discomfort from his hamstring and back injuries in Week 7. He was ultimately limited to 10 snaps on Monday night.
Jaydon Blue, who was promoted from the practice squad earlier this week, is the only other Eagles running back on the roster. The Eagles previously had him active for Week 6 but did not play him at all despite injuries knocking them down to Dameon Pierce (who is now on injured reserve) as the only backfield option in that game.
By elevating Mitchell, the Eagles now have three running backs for Sunday’s game. He could also factor in as a kick returner with Britan Covey out.
This is Mitchell’s second temporary elevation this season. He only has one more remaining.
