Finally, I think I’ve got one here that all of us can agree on.
Nico Hoerner was one of the top players in the National League this year. He might have received an All-Star nod if he’d hit somewhat better
in the first half.
Overall his year was worth 6.1 bWAR, which ranked tied for fourth among all NL position players with Matt Olson. It’s Nico’s second season with over 5 bWAR, he likely gets some downballot MVP consideration when the voting is revealed next month, and he very probably will take home his second Gold Glove this fall.
Nico’s first arbitration year, 2023, resulted in a $2.525 million deal. That was settled by team and player Jan. 13, 2023, avoiding an arb hearing. Later that spring, on March 28, just a couple of days before Opening Day, Nico and the Cubs agreed to a three-year, $35 million extension that paid him $11.5 million in 2024 and 2025 and will pay him $12 million in 2026.
The Cubs got a pretty good bargain here, I think. About the only thing he doesn’t do is hit for power, and that’s fine for a player with his other skills.
2026 will be Hoerner’s age-29 season. The sorts of skills he has should be good for another three or four years, I think, and it would be useful to keep him around.
Three years, $45 million, with a fourth-year team option for $20 million or a $5 million buyout.
Who says no?
While you’re thinking about that, here are some Nico defensive highlights from this past season.
