Football coaches vote unanimously to expand redshirt rule.
College football leaders rarely agree on anything, but the American Football Coaches Association unanimously votes on increasing the redshirt preservation rule from four games to nine games. Many want five full years of eligibility, but concerns about lawsuits led to this arrangement, which is more likely to pass with less legal pushback. The hope is that more players are available over the course of the season as injuries pile up and fewer players opt out early in the season to preserve a year of eligibility. The NCAA Division I committee will still need to vote to approve this.
How coaches want to fix the college football calendar.
This was expected to be the main discussion topic at the meetings until the redshirt rule news broke. Instead, that discussion was left to a small group of coaches on Monday. But the calendar is broken, with the playoff lasting the better part of two months, while portal drama has overshadowed it. The coaches also admit that it’s tough to change anything quickly, but the biggest issues are the transfer portal, the coaching carousel/early signing period, and the CFP, which all need to be untangled.
MBB Rankings
Chris Murray is back at it this week. Utah State remains in the top spot, fresh off their debut in the national rankings. San Diego State has continued its climb and now sits second on the list, followed by New Mexico. Nevada drops a few spots to fourth, with Colorado State and Grand Canyon each moving up a spot. They move up because Boise State has moved all the way down to seventh with three straight losses. The last five spots all remained the same
